The Effects of Radiations on Biological Systems I. Influence of High-frequency X-ray Radiation upon the Duration of the Prepupal Period of Drosophilae by Raymond Hussey, William R. Thompson, Robert Tennant, and Nancy

چکیده
Some results of investigations conducted in this laboratory concerned with the influence of x-ray irradiation upon the duration of the prepupal period of Drosophila melanogaster have been reported 1,2 previously. In every instance an extension of the larval period resulted. In the case of high-frequency radiation, investigations of the course of such effects could not be extended as much as was desired, on account of the low power of sources then available. However, over the early part of the course it was definitely indicated I that the duration of the prepupal period was an increasing function of the time of irradiation under the given conditions. In the absence of more powerful sources investigations of effects of more extensive irradiation were conducted 2 with the inclusion of radiations of lower frequency in order to increase the available power. The demonstration of a maximum point of effectiveness of prolonged irradiation (in extension of the mean prepupal period, ¢) was a striking result. I t is the purpose of the present communication to give the results of similar experiments employing high-frequency radiation from a more powerful source. 3

An in-vivo study on the energy dependence of X-ray biological effectiveness
Background: The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has attributed the same relative risk for X and gamma radiations of all energies. Several studies have proven that the biological effect of low energy photon is more than that of higher ones. The assessment of risks is important due to the wide use of low energy X-rays for mammography screening and other diagnostic appli...

Data are presented which indicate that variation in temperature is associated with only slight variation in the speed of the radiochemical inactivation of pepsin in dilute solution.

The effect of high-frequency x-ray irradiation in prolongation of the larval stage of Drosophila melanogaster has been studied further, and evidence presented of the attainment of a maximum effect followed by a decrease to an almost level plateau in the course curve of average (median) prepupal period (phi) as a function of the period of irradiation (t) under otherwise fixed conditions. The var...
متن کاملThe Effect of Radiations from a Mercury Arc in Quartz on Enzymes
Amylase in solution is inactivated by the radiations from a mercury arc in quartz, in a manner similar to that previously reported for pepsin. The reaction was followed to a point where more than 88 per cent change had taken place, the course being that of mono-molecular radiochemical change. Apparently, this reaction is due to the influence of ultra-violet radiation alone.

At the present time our information concerning the changes effected in living matter by x-rays and the radiations from radio-active substances is confined chiefly to the characteristic exudative phenomena noted in animal tissues, and the altered structural character of cells observed following exposures to these radiations. We have but little data bearing on the underlying physiological process...
